Unsafe and unequal access to abortion care remains a significant public health and human rights issue across the European Union, with wide disparities between Member States. Restrictive laws do not reduce the incidence of abortion, but instead drive individuals toward unsafe procedures, increasing health risks and deepening social and economic inequalities, particularly among vulnerable groups.
As future health professionals, EMSA supports the European Citizens’ Initiative “My Voice, My Choice” and calls for equitable access to safe and legal abortion services across the EU. We urge European institutions to ensure cross-border access to care, remove unnecessary procedural barriers, and guarantee the availability of accurate, evidence-based information.
