Day 6 – Addiction

What are the general characteristics of addiction?

  • The object of addiction draws a person away from other activities and begins to control his or her life
  • Contact with the object of addiction is largely pleasing
  • A person is not completely capable of making a choice about contact with this object
  • A person consciously does something harmful to them
  • The main life gratifications are provided by the specific object of addiction

What is addiction?

  • Addiction is an acquired strong need to constantly provide the body with some substance or perform some activity. It can be both physical and mental.
  • In the case of physical or physiological dependence, the addict starts to feel a variety of physical ailments such as pain, cold and hot waves, muscle tremors, insomnia, hyperactivity when they stop using the object of addiction. This is the so-called abstinence syndrome.
  • Psychological dependence is almost always accompanied by physical addiction. Sometimes, however, it occurs independently.

You can get addicted to almost anything. The most common and most dangerous addictions are:

  • Alcoholism
  • Drug addiction
  • Workaholism
  • Internet addiction
  • Sexaholism
  • Gambling addiction

Important warning signs!

  • Behavioral and personality changes – loosening of family relationships, fascination with new relationships, immature behavior, lack of plans for the future, low self-esteem, minor lies, anxiety, lack of self-preservation, hostility and aggression
  • Changes in life activity – unjustified absences or lateness (at work/school), neglect of duties, changes in eating habits and sleep patterns, problems at school or work, problems with the law
  • Worsening of health
  • Change in appearance – lack of interest in hygiene and appearance
  • At least 15.3 million persons worldwide have drug use disorders.
  • The harmful use of alcohol results in 3.3 million deaths each year.
